How home game settle-up actually works
For every player, compute net = cash-out − total buy-ins. Winners have a positive net, losers have a negative net. The sum of all nets must be zero — if it isn't, somebody miscounted chips or forgot a re-buy.
To minimise the number of payments, sort losers and winners by absolute size and match the biggest debtor with the biggest creditor until both balances are exhausted, then move on. This greedy algorithm gives the minimum (or near-minimum) number of transfers for the vast majority of real home games.
Tips for a smooth poker night
- Agree on chip values before the first hand.
- Track every re-buy on paper or in an app — chips lie.
- Cash out one player at a time, count chips with a witness.
- Allow card transfers for players who didn't bring enough cash.
- Save the final settlement somewhere — disputes always come up later.
